Today my friend from across the way came over to show us his Halloween costume, which was earkle pretty cool. I would have to say that ombre is a righteous dude who comes over on random occasion to play some mortal kombat with me and other playstation games, right on righteous and is under my wing as far as listening to metal. I will play him random stuff so that he maybe will click onto some of it, i think he digs decrepit birth.
For a while I’ve been looking for simple sampling + sequencing software–I haven’t gotten around to putting Pro Tools on my geriatric laptop, though I’ll probably try soon, just to see if it works. Anyway, I finally found some programs that work well enough for my purposes. This is the first piece I’ve made: It’s built from 4 sampled guitar chords (in an open tuning I made up) and two mouth noises, contributed by each of my AW cohorts.
This will be a short entry, but I just wanted to mention that we’ve got a Facebook profile now. I know the debate rages on among hip internet age folks as to who sucks and who rules (Myspace vs. Facebook, or Ning if you’re 3rd party). We’ve decided to become one of those annoying ‘undecided’ voters and wrap our 6 arms in a loving embrace around every social network in sight (or site [get it?]). So without further adieu, please become one of our ‘fans’ on Facebook here. It’ll make us feel a little bit special.
Also, we’re looking for the right studio to record at this Winter. We want something fairly cheapish with a nice big drum room. The idea is to track the instruments there and finish the vocals, overdubs, and mixing here at Camp Air War. To do that we’ll need a place that has a Pro Tools setup. If anyone in the Portland area has good or bad stories they want to share, please holla at ya boyz.

I have a story to tell you of this one day in time.
Today I saw a giant brick mail box that reminded me of a story of a friend of mine god bless his heart and his old mans imapla, an 80’s impala, I don’t know the exact manufacturing date but it was old and 80’s. This wonderful glorious friend of mine was driving his fathers lovely imapala down a particular street some date in time I don’t recall long ago, to bring my friend home, upon turning down the street my friend who was passenger made my wonderful glorious god fearing friend who was driving to laugh hysterically, probably by passing gas< who knows< I sure don’t? He laughed so hard that a booger fell out of his nose and onto his T-shirt shirt, in laughter and amazement he looked down laughing at the giant booger that was stuck on his wonderful T-shirt. He was laughing so hard at the booger on his shirt that he didn’t realize he was about to hit a giant mailbox, until it was too late, bricks flew all over, I laughed. But the other story I heard was that there was a bee, in the car, which is funnier than the booger on the T-shirt.
I did these two brief sample-collage pieces with Byron’s Boss Dr. Sample. They have some elements in common. Samples manually triggered, structures improvised. They’re extremely short pieces because my only means of recording is the basic Windows Sound Recorder, which does one minute at a time. Source materials include Cos, The Monkees, Wolf Parade, The Feedback and of course DJ Jubilee.
To echo Cord’s earlier post, we had a blast playing at Slim’s with Ley Lines last night. Most people don’t realize that they are actually 400 year old vampires. It’s true. It explains such preternatural rock and roll composition and performance. Here is what they look like playing a show (or Black Mass With The Mortals as they like to call it):
They’ve wrassled up a new line up since their last recording, and I’m anxious to hear the new batch of songs they’re cooking up. Post show, we made our way back to the Air War compound with a few friends in tow for lots of this:
There are actually real and incriminating photos of the event, including the aftermath, but those are better kept far away from the internet. Let’s just say a girl kicked all of our asses in Mortal Combat.
I made it to bed close to 4 am. After sleeping really late (which I rarely get to do), I was met with the pleasant surprise of a FUCKING NEW ORLEANS SAINTS GAME ON TV…AND THEY FUCKING WON! We don’t get very many Saints games here in the Pacific Northwest, but the Black and Gold runs deep in our heritage, and I now feel renewed. The rest of the day was…amazing. I’d like to nominate this Fall as ‘the best Fall ever’. It totally makes up for that crap-ass non-Spring and late starting Summer. The sky has been so blue. The air has been so crisp and fresh. The leaves are crunchy. Life is a good. I try to soak it all in, but it’s like drinking from a firehose. There’s just too much. My brain can not experience it all. I’d like to say that we live in the best neighborhood. Corner store chicken wings and Jo Jos for 5 dollars American. To give you a deliciousness reference point, they bring out a new batch every 7 minutes or so, and they’re gone within a minute or two. This is because there is a line of people standing in the store who have put their names down, paid for them, and are willing to wait 20 minutes for their order to be filled. I was in that number today, and the store gave out free ICEEs to everyone waiting. The Blue Raspberry did me right.
Greg and Cord spent the afternoon making mix tapes (and I do mean ‘tapes’) for several pals of ours, dubbing them from vinyl and mp3 to cassette. It was a strange marriage of new and old technology if you think about it.
We have a couple shows in a little over a week, one on each end of Portland. Come holla when we’re in your hood.
Nov 4th (election night) – The Know in NE
Nov 6th (not election night) – The Twighlight in SE
Speaking of elections, don’t forget to do this (and by this, I mean ‘vote for me’).
))<B Tat>((
p.s. Thanks to our St Johns crew for showing up last night! (Ya’ll know who you are)
Ley Lines, Slim’s, St. Johns, and sweet peeps who showed up and showed love — THANKS! Ley Lines Rule–they’re Sonically Sweeeet, Super Tight and also Premium Buds… Slim’s is such a nice-sounding room. Their hamburgers are tremendous!
